The world is becoming increasingly interconnected, and so are its challenges-The globe has become one complex system full of interrelated parts, each part has its own value in contributing to the larger whole. In response to the inter-connections being made through globalization, new ways of thinking and approaching challenges must be made. As a result, new fields of study are emerging and job are being created in response to the shifting global workplace. Many of the areas of study on university campuses still practice very singular way of thinking, not straying from their disciplinary perspective. If only there was a university program that taught students to think both critically and contextually about worldly problems, that allowed students to weigh insights from several different disciplines and that equips students to be adaptive and responsive to change….
That is where the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies degree comes in. This program is offered to students who have a thirst for knowledge and do not wish to be constrained to keeping their studies within one discipline. That is why the Interdisciplinary Studies Program drew me in anyway. After going through the first few years of my degree with no clear sense of where I was going with it, I was told about this program by one of my professors. He suggested that I turn my interest in both Sociology and Physical Education and sport into a thesis which would allow me learn more about topics I enjoy and tailor my degree to fit areas of employment which would be available to me after graduating.
