Most university degrees come pre-made – there is very little room to feel your way through and customize your degree to what you want it to be. That is where the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary studies degree is different – it is a true DIY degree. You make it what you want to make it, you include the features you want, and leave out what you don’t. When you build your degree yourself the process becomes just as much of a learning process as the classes that you’re taking, you are forced to think about what you want to get out of the process, and how your education can be used to pursue interests and dreams that are more than just regions of interest like “science” or “history” – it takes it one step further to understanding what you want to do with your knowledge.
But how is that interdisciplinary?
It becomes interdisciplinary when you realize what you want to tackle in your life, whatever your passion is, often it won’t fit into any one disciplinary bubble. When you begin to think interdisciplinary, you begin to see the varied perspectives for solving every issue:
- Want to tackle climate change? Well, you’ll probably need at least some knowledge of the science of the natural environment, but you also need to consider how it’s impacted by things like city planning and business motivations.
- How about fixing the political system? Do you understand the sociology and psychology behind government establishment and people’s attitudes and beliefs regarding it? What philosophical and moral background are you coming from?
That’s why the interdisciplinary studies program is not just for people to want jobs, it’s for people who want to solve problems and address real world issues and make a career out of it. This is a program for people who want to be able to change the world in any tiny way with their knowledge and expertise.
